‘What are you doing in amongst those trees?’ asked Eddie, our Chairman. I was in the onion patch harvesting the shallots.

The shallots are magnificent, but he was referring to the onions which are much bigger, leafier and earlier than last year when we had a very dry spring. But hold on, wasn’t this year’s spring even drier? Didn’t I hear Coulsdon only had 4% of average rainfall? It was much hotter this year though, so maybe that made a difference. Or was it just the constant showers we seem to have had all June? Whatever the reasons, whatever the weather, it seems that some vegetables flourish while others are struggling.
