On 21 September Smitham Primary School held their first horticultural show in conjunction with Smitham Allotments Society. It was a great success and the pupils were delighted to be able to show their parents some of the vegetables they had been growing since early in the year.
Ann Shore and Mary Chapman from the Society helped the pupils to set up the stalls and they and Eddie Nash and Colin Street added some of their own produce to make the show a community event. There was also jam and chutney tasting and the green tomato chutney made by pupils last October with their own tomatoes had matured beautifully.
The following day the produce was sold and over £80 was raised for the school gardening fund. A quantity of the vegetables which could be stored such as potatoes, carrots, and onions were held back by the school to make soup in the winter months.
